I wouldn't say it's unusual, more that it's uncommon? But it depends on the world. The base I originated from didn't have talking animals. But in Otome's world it's the norm. Then there's Planet Tara, inhabited by "cat people", who have altered their DNA to change the shape of their eyes and ears.

Every planet you come across or visit is almost always drastically different than the last, it makes traveling a bit exciting in that sense.
