Ruby keeps saying that it’s not safe to talk to them.
…But Ruby also changes the subject whenever I ask her about anything about herself. I think Ruby thinks she’s pretty tough but maybe she’s overestimating herself and underestimating Kiichi and Aika.
[also they might not have died, but that’s less important than this.]
Also, their bosses are somebody new who they don’t usually work with. And Aika said they’ve only met them once.
[ if they trust aika and kiichi enough to show them some of the more recent messages. could be worth trying -- he likes them both, but doesn't want to get anybody in trouble, reapers or players. ]
They haven't been in touch with the Reapers much, have they? They made a bunch of changes for the worse. ...Could be why someone is trying to help us. [ by sending messages and stuff. ] Someone higher up than the Reapers.
Yeah. I mean it kind of sounds like - maybe they’re getting tricked and these new bosses aren’t trying to do a game to come back to life at all. They just want an excuse to bring us here and erase our worlds.
...I don't see the point. [ he's not doubting her. it's just such a heinous idea. ] But—even Ruby was upset. With why all this was happening, and why living people were used. Erasing worlds. All of that. So... maybe.
[ why else would it suddenly be so much worse? ]
Should we try to talk to them? Fuwa and Kiichi. I asked Ruby—they aren't monitored all the time. If they just... hear us out. And don't report us. If we talk to all of them, maybe we can figure this out.
I don't want to do that without thinking it through.
[she wasn't meaning to imply she didn't trust ruby, just that ruby is a particular type of person, a type she has a lot of too, who will try to carry things herself and work hard not to let others notice what she's carrying. and she might think she has to carry this for aika and kiichi but she might be wrong.]
[ for better or worse. he's listened to her advice about keeping this in a close circle, and it's scary to expand past that, but. ]
But if things really aren't what they seem... they may all need to know. [ ... ] We could wait until Friday. And see if we get anything else from our other source. There should still be time to decide on what to say... before the game ends.
Yeah. I think that's a good idea. And I'll talk to them and find out what I can about their bosses and stuff without telling them.
Like maybe we could even just ask like... as a hypothetical. Hey, what would you do if you were assigned to a game and you found out some of it was based on a lie?
Aika told me she likes these games because it's good to give people chances to come back to life, but she doesn't like how cruel they are sometimes. So I feel like if she knew we wouldn't have needed to come back to life if they hadn't brought us...
...Yeah. It upset Ruby when we were speaking about it.
[ the world destroying was nasty enough business, but the fact that they weren't even dead runs so contrary to the very idea of the game. ]
The Reapers aren't cruel. So... I hope they'll hear us out. I don't think they have the power to save us. But they'd deserve to know if something is wrong too.
She does...? They've always seemed fine to me... I mean, I don't talk to them about any of this stuff, but Aika's definitely answered something Ruby said she probably wouldn't answer for a player, so...
[he's nomming a cookie.
man, why does all of this have to be so complicated?]
I mean, it wasn't that important. I messaged all of them the other week and asked, like... if doing this kind of job was ever hard for them, or they're pretty used to it by now.
I really like Aika! I think she’s the type of person who if you say ‘don’t worry, I’m breaking this game somehow!’ she’s not going to take that very seriously.
But I also don’t feel like she’s going to like being made to participate in something that’s against the rules. And Kiichi - he can stand up for himself if he has to.
I mean, in a job like that, you kinda have to be able to.
[he shrugs a shoulder.]
I guess- I've been in a pretty similar line of work, so maybe I'm a little more sympathetic by default. But depending on the way their job is, I think saying they're not safe to talk to could mean she thinks there's some kind of risk to them if they hear stuff and they don't do something about it, and that we're not gonna outrank their job. I don't really get the vibe they'd necessarily want to cause problems for us.
I mean - I like them all too, Netzach. They're all my friends. Ruby even gave me that McFlurry for being her favorite.
And last week I kind of thought the same thing, but like...Ruby has been really upset by how unfair and wrong this game is. But she also says things like Aika and Kiichi would tell on us right away. I just don't know if it's right.
How well does she know them, anyway? She might be wrong about it, but-- yeah, if she's been saying stuff like that it's probably still a risk. Especially this far in.
[imagine tripping at the finish line because we were like NO sweet reaper who is trying to help we will NOT listen.]
