[well, it's after trial. she can be found out at the canals, giving off the impression of someone who hasn't slept in about seventy two hours. a little wired, like a wild animal that's hit the point of exhaustion but isn't safe yet.]

[ the canals sound like a great place to hang out after that oofa doofa of a trial, and that's actually a genuine sentiment in zelda's case. the waterways almost remind her of her private study back in hateno village, somewhere she could get away from the hustle and bustle of the kingdom. while she's not expecting to run into anyone here, she's willing to make an exception for ylfa, especially when she sees how the younger girl looks. ]

Mm. More than that, I think...I felt close to him because it never felt like our lives were in danger. We were always talking about things like...which team might beat us in a swimming competition, or whether to draw us as birds or wolves.

...I see. In a way, it's almost as if the full reality of the Reaper's Game didn't truly hit you until it became personal. Hikari and Yang Guifei were different because you didn't have that deeper relationship with either of them. But with Rin... he was more than another Player. He was your friend.

[oh, she is such a princess. getting to have cool time and purification magic and being protected by a valiant knight...

ylfa is always a little starstruck around princesses. it's better once she gets to know them, but this memory still makes her have that feeling again, like zelda is someone she's not even sure she's meant to be talking to. her cheeks flush a little thinking about link, who zelda described in the most romantic way possible. the bisexual 12 year old feeling of not being sure if you're feeling het about the thought of a knight as heroic as the one the princess is describing, or feeling gay about the thought of potentially being seen that way by a princess. confusing!]

What happened? Why were you in another era?

[ im so happy for ylfa's queer dilemma. even though ylfa might be as much of a shipper as rauru and sonia are, zelda remains in denial about how loving her words are, how smitten she seems when she talks about her knight... even if the blush upon her face belies whatever she may try to claim. ]

It's... a bit of a long story. [ beat ] Though I suppose, if neither of us have very much going on at the moment, I could attempt to explain.

I was sent to a time long, long before the age in which I lived because I had an important job to do. [ she takes the master sword off of the makeshift sheath keeping it strapped to her shoulder, because she's still too cheap to have bought a belt, and holds it out for ylfa to look at as she speaks. ] Do you remember when I told you about the Master Sword, about how I needed to make sure she returned to her proper owner? She was damaged in my era and needed a very long time to heal. Much, much longer than we had in the present.

It took me a while to understand why... but I eventually figured it out.

[ her grip on the sword's hilt tightens a little. ]

The Master Sword is very special—its true power can only be unlocked by its chosen hero, and it is the only thing able to defeat the Demon King. Like you saw Queen Sonia say, my bloodline is gifted with a sacred power... the power to seal away evil and heal its withering touch. Even if I wasn't the last living member of the royal family...

I could think of nothing I wanted more than to heal the sword and return it to Link. It is the least I could do, for the man who has done so, so much for me.
